Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your House

July 10, 2020

When it’s a searing summer morning in Auburn and Opelika, nothing could be worse than registering your AC isn’t performing the way it is meant to. The last thing you need to do is schedule HVAC service. But your air conditioner is a fairly complex system, so it can be almost impossible to find out what’s creating the trouble all alone.

That’s why Farnell Mechanical, Inc. wrote this handbook to help you figure out what may be happening with your air conditioner. From here, you’ll uncover some common situtations that explain why your family is feeling a little unpleasant. And though a couple of these are fairly painless DIY tasks, you may want to find a skilled technician for HVAC repair.

And if you do, Farnell Mechanical, Inc. is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Auburn and Opelika.

1. Your System Settings Could Be Off

Every household adjusts their thermostat a little differently to fit their particular needs. Even so, a number of families make the mistake of setting their device to “On” instead of “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your HVAC system will continue to push out air even when you’ve attained your set temperature.

This can look like your ducts are blowing out untreated air, when in fact it’s just utilizing the fan more frequently than required. Swap this setting and see if things seem better.

2. Your Home Comfort System Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two central places to investigate for dirt or dust accumulation when your home comfort system doesn’t appear to be functioning right.

First, examine your AC system’s filter. If you don’t replace your filter on a regular basis, built-up dust can make it more difficult for air to travel through and cool your home. If your filter is visibly dirty or dusty, it’s definitely time for a substitute. (And as a rule, you have to change it about once every three months or more frequently.)

If your filter appears clean, move to your outdoor unit. See if there’s enough clearing around it and sweep away plants or litter around it. This piece of your cooling system discharges the heat from within your home. If the coils outside are closed off, you won’t be cool indoors.

We recommend booking professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your system operating like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that conditions the air in your house. It cycles between your internal and outdoor system pieces to soak up and release heat, to help your space stay comfortable. If there is a crack somewhere, you won’t be feeling cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in treated air, climbing energy expenses, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises coming from your air conditioner.

If you suspect refrigerant may be leaking, call Farnell Mechanical, Inc. for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Need to Be Replaced

Your air conditioner includes a a handful of important elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any part is broken, your home comfort is hurt.

Our Farnell Mechanical, Inc. experts are certified and experienced in HVAC. They can help you locate and mend any issue.

5. Your AC Needs to Be Updated

If your equipment is upward of 10 years old, it could be about time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it unfortunately won’t operate as well as it did when it was new. And it could be making your space feel unpleasant.

If your system is more current but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it may be the wrong size for your living space. Air conditioners are not one-size-fits-all. An air conditioner that’s undersized just can’t help a place the way an appropriately sized air conditioner can.
