Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Auburn and Opelika

April 13, 2016

The weather is finally getting warmer and soon you could have to change over to your air conditioner. Along with arranging your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Farnell Mechanical, Inc., there are a few other things you can do to stay comfortable and save money throughout the year.

During the transformation season in Auburn and Opelika, those far too few spring temperatures, you probably use ceiling fans to keep comfy. Did you know that running your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner may not only keep you more comfortable during the warmer days, but also save you on your bills? In order to do that you have to be sure you’re using ceiling fans and your air conditioning as you should be. Here’s a few things to note:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by a couple degrees, in addition to utilizing your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level that much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lessening the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to change dependent on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand beneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, change the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually lower the temperature of the air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like they are lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to feel the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
