How to Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Well Through the Fall

August 24, 2016

Your air conditioner has had a lot of work to do this summer and we still have some more heat coming. Just because the date on the calendar has switched over to fall doesn’t mean you’re finished with your AC for the season. Staying on top of annual AC maintenance, while also following a few other tips, can help you maintain your air conditioner while keeping your home cozy too.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Debris can pile up around your outside unit, particularly during the fall. When it comes time to rake up the leaves in your yard, make sure to rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can hinder air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down faster. We want your air conditioner to last as long as possible.

Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Set your thermostat at the highest temperature you can while still remaining comfy. Whenever possible, take advantage of supplemental cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your thermostat, the harder your system will have to work to attain that temperature. You may think turning your unit off completely will save on energy and help your system, but that makes more work for it to make up when you flip it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is something else that could lead to untimely system failure.
