The Next Generation of Cooling Refrigerants. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. If we didn’t have refrigerants, we wouldn’t have air conditioning. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce due to its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and is free of chlorine, which means it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel good about using this refrigerant in Opelika because it’ll help make your system perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was manufactured before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to look into upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is totally unavailable. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to run your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Farnell Mechanical, Inc. work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump you can better rely on. Additionally, avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
